Nature North London
Highgate Society part of new network for nature
On Saturday April 25 around 60 nature and biodiversity groups and organisations in the areas surrounding Hampstead Heath came together to discuss the formation of a new network aimed at collaborating on wildlife corridors radiating out from the Heath.
Held at Highgate Junior school, the meeting, organised by Growing Green, the Highgate Neighbourhood Forum, Highgate Society and Heath & Hampstead Society, workshopped ideas for accelerating nature restoration and development in an area of approximately 21 square km around the Heath.
Considered by over 80 delegates were Impact, Organisation, Funding, Community and Mapping, generating a slew of ideas and practical actions that could transform the efforts of the many individual groups into a tapestry of nature and wildlife anchored in the biodiversity contained on the 800 acres of open green space of the Heath.
Jeska Harrington Gould (Growing Green), organiser, said:
’Nature North London is an idea whose time has come. As policy begins to catch up with the work on the ground of committed voluntary nature groups, local government, institutions and landowners, we have a chance now to harness the efforts of all and make a real difference, supporting nature in a very large section of north London.’
Alicia Pivaro, (Highgate Neighbourhood Forum), organiser, commented:
‘Our work now is to collate all the input we have and turn it into practical actions – there was a real buzz at the meeting about what we could achieve by working together’
