Highgate’s pavements, roads and public spaces
The Highgate Society’s Travel and Transport group is compiling a list of repairs and improvements needed around our area. Please contact us with your suggestions.
What are we looking for?
We want to raise significant issues with the relevant Council, or where appropriate TfL, but not major new schemes. These will be issues where you (and we) think there is likely to be a broad consensus of residents and businesses in agreement. For issues needing immediate attention, such as individual broken or unstable paving stones, or potholes, please report these via the FixMyStreet app (fixmystreet.com/).
Why we are doing this
For several years our group has prepared a list of issues and provided it to the relevant Councils. The Councils are stretched financially and in terms of staff so they don’t always know the specifics of local issues. With your help we can keep the Council teams focused on what matters to Highgate residents and make sure limited public funds are spent wisely. This has often been successful and we have shown below where some issues we’ve raised have been actioned.
Some examples
Examples of issues and suggestions we’ve listed in the past are:
- repair of pavement surface outside Gonnermans, Archway Road***
- repair of steps from Archway Road to Winchester Road
- repair of wall of Highgate School chapel***
- repair of retaining wall of the Bank, Highgate Hill***
- bus build out outside Channing senior school to facilitate wheelchair boarding of buses
- narrowing of pelican crossing from Channing junior school to outside Lussmans on Highgate Hill
- a bike stand outside the entrance to Waterlow Park at the top of Dartmouth Park Hill
- refurbishment of the former 271 bus stand and reconfiguration of the junction of the High Street with South Grove to create public space on the south-east side (outside the Angel).
*** these items have been done, since we listed them!
