Former 271 bus stand
The removal of the 271 bus route in February 2023 left an unsightly hole in the middle of Highgate Village. In November 2023, at a routine meeting between the Highgate Society and Camden Council, the Camden officers suggested a remedial scheme of simple York Stone paving would be acceptable. Subsequent correspondence with Camden supported this approach but confirmed that no funding was currently available. On this basis the Society’s planning committee agreed to take the first step by applying for planning permission – a proposal approved by Highgate Society Council. Next steps are to be agreed once planning approval is granted.
The scheme as submitted follows the principles suggested by Camden officers and avoids any road layout issues at this stage. The aim for the space is to form a clear paved central space to provide flexible accommodation for market stalls and any other activities. Additional trees and fixed benches will be provided, and there are plans for a further Visit Highgate orientation board. A public engagement day was held in the 271 bus stop space in March and 97 responses were received which were overwhelmingly in support of the scheme. This was echoed by local Camden and Haringey Councillors and other stakeholders, who were also consulted. The scheme has now been submitted to Camden for planning approval – hopefully on the basis of “what’s not to like”.
We keenly await Camden’s decision, after which the scheme can hopefully be taken forward as an exciting community project. We would very much welcome your support for the application which can be viewed here under reference number 2026/1323/P
