Society calls for a road and crossing safety review in Highgate
The Highgate Society has called for a full road and crossing safety review in central Highgate, following the recent tragic death of a 16 year old girl on her way to school on a crossing in North Road, N6. One factor in the accident is the very high level of traffic on North Road at 18,000 vehicles / day. Many of these vehicles will have travelled on Camden’s roads as part of an overall journey. That is why Camden and Haringey need to work together to address road safety urgently.
Following the accident we attended an online meeting organised by Tulip Siddiq MP, with a further meeting planned, and have written to her, TfL, and Haringey, and have shared our letter with Camden. In the letter:
- We highlight that there are nearly 5,000 school pupils in the central Highgate area, and why many pupils cross busy roads sometimes several times every day, including when moving between school sites.
- Based on the evidence of a review of accident statistics and their locations, we ask that Haringey’s proposed safety review is broadened and deepened so that, as well as North Road/North Hill, it covers Highgate High Street, Highgate Hill and the sections we identify of Hampstead Lane and Hornsey Lane. Together, these roads include many of the main collision hotspots in the area.
- As Highgate High Street and Highgate Hill lie on the boundary between Camden and Haringey, we ask TfL to help the two boroughs work together so that these roads are included in the review.
- We ask for TfL’s support in reducing the overall volume of traffic through the area, through area wide traffic management.
These immediate requests are directly relevant to achieving Safe and Healthy Streets for residents including particularly school pupils.
