Loft Conversions, Dormers and Roofs

These are popular ways of extending living space within close urban confines, but present a number of difficulties in the context of the Conservation Area, as well as to the protection of privacy and loss of amenity for immediate neighbours. Care should be taken to avoid overlooking and creating a sense of enclosure, particularly where a roof terrace is an integral part of the plan. Skylights must always be flush with the roof slope and conform to standards acceptable within a heritage environment so as not to appear obtrusive or incompatible. Front dormers and changes to roof lines and profiles will generally not be endorsed or permitted under guidance from the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan.
