The removal of the 271 bus route in February 2023 left an unsightly hole in the middle of Highgate Village. In November 2023 Camden officers suggested a remedial scheme of simple York Stone paving would be acceptable. Subsequent correspondence with Camden supported this approach but confirmed that no funding was currently available. On this basis the Society’s planning committee agreed to take the first step by applying for planning permission

It was lovely to see the centre of the village so buzzy on a cold day at the beginning of December. In spite of the bitterly cold weather, we demonstrated that a small market in the Old Bus Stand would add to the commercial life of the village.

Many Highgate residents will be sorry to see the loss of the direct 271 route to the City, but there is a positive side. For many years we have thought that parking buses in the centre of the village is a missed opportunity for better use of the space, so during the Fair in the Square and as part of the Highgate Festival we revived some ideas from 2007 and held an exhibition and informal consultation on possibilities. Transport for London have launched a consultation about proposed changes to bus routes in Highgate. The main changes proposed are that the 271 route will cease, other than as a night bus. The 143 will be routed via Archway Road instead of Highgate Village and the 263 will travel via Highgate Village instead of Archway Road.
