‘No right turn’ rules on Swains Lane: Update
Camden abandons ‘No right turn’ rule at the Swains Lane/South Grove junction
Following representations by the Highgate Society, Pond Square residents and others, Camden Council has announced that the ‘No right turn’ restriction at the South Grove junction of Swains Lane will be withdrawn. The restriction at Bisham Gardens will be made permanent.
Camden’s decision statement and accompanying documents can be seen here.
William Britain, Chair of the Highgate Society said “This is a good outcome for Highgate and we should certainly be pleased that we have achieved a better outcome than the first experimental scheme. However it remains a concern that Camden (and I suspect Haringey would be no different) give little or no consideration to the wider knock on effects in adjoining boroughs and the boundary roads – in this case Highgate Hill and High Street. Boundary roads at the edge of the boroughs and areas in adjoining boroughs are seen as fair game for picking up additional diverted traffic and the resulting pollution. Further work is needed by both boroughs working together to tame the traffic on Highgate Hill and High Street.”
