Dr Karen Moloney tells the story behind her forthcoming musical at Upstairs at the Gatehouse.
If you are at all interested in history, in characters that have shaped our world, and you enjoy a riveting drama, then here’s what we’re going to share today.
First of all, I am not your typical musical theatre producer. I’m 68, retired, and mostly busy gardening, and yet there was something so strong drawing me to writing a musical about John Harrison and his thwarted attempts to create a clock that would save lives, that I put down my trowel and set about writing and producing it.
Ten years later and we are about to have a 3-week run at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, a world premiere, no less. Thank you for your interest in being here. Over the next 40 minutes, I’d like to share with you:
- Who John Harrison was and why he was so obsessed with inventing an accurate chronometer
- What the political, economic and social contexts were in the 18th century that drove him
- How a complete novice like me who can’t read or write music creates a full 2 act musical
- What the show at the Gatehouse is about and why it differs from reality
I will share this story with slides and videos and would love to hear your questions at the end.
