For many years the grade II listed retaining wall for the Bank, the small road in front of Channing Senior School, has been in a fragile state. Haringey have now unveiled plans to restore the wall and hope to start work soon.
Many Highgate residents will be sorry to see the loss of the direct 271 route to the City, but there is a positive side. For many years we have thought that parking buses in the centre of the village is a missed opportunity for better use of the space, so during the Fair in the Square and as part of the Highgate Festival we revived some ideas from 2007 and held an exhibition and informal consultation on possibilities. The Haringey Planning Department is currently refusing to disclose the communications they have with developers before an application is formally made. The Highgate Society has had to make a reference to the Information Commissioner’s Office asking them to require Haringey to comply with the law and disclose those negotiations. The lengthy saga of the various applications relating to the construction of 7 houses continues and the Society is now of the view that this has been mishandled by Haringey. With the launch of the Beta version of the Airscape air quality sensor network in Camden on 28 April you can now access data from the 225 sensors round the Borough, including ones on Highgate Hill, Pond Square and Hampstead Lane.

As members of the Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee, the Highgate Society supports the aims of the Heath and Hampstead Society and the City of London to preserve Hampstead Heath and, equally important, to ensure that development near the Heath must not harm its openness, or views from and to it. The Society believes that the massing and height of the six tower blocks proposed at Murphy’s Yard, of between 11 to 19 storeys, will have an overwhelming adverse impact on the openness of the Heath.
